My family and I have spent the last 2 weeks RVing at the San Onofre Recreational Beach on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base. We have had 2 of our children and 2 of our grandchildren with us as well as having extended family and friends here. It has been terrific. And it will continue to be terrific for another week. And especially in the midst of our family fun, God continues to show me HIS love and the ways that HE wants to work in my life.
My husband has been an avid surfer for many years. He was stationed here at Camp Pendleton for several years during our marriage and has spoken often of his times surfing here on his lunch breaks. Our family has camped or RVed here for many years (22 or so) and our children have had many opportunities to see the ocean at its best and at its most daunting,,,, and to surf the waves at the infamous Trestles’ surf spots.
On Tuesday, my husband and our young adult son Chris went out surfing. They had a great time together. They went out again on Wednesday and it was great. On Thursday, my husband had to go back to Hemet to run some errands. This left Chris to either surf alone, or not surf at all.
The surf was AMAZINGLY large due to a solar eclipse. I encouraged Chris to go out all day Thursday. Finally, he made a statement that impacted me greatly. It was the LORD speaking to me through my young adult son. He said, “I don’t want to go out without my dad.” I know he meant my husband, but how many of us look at a difficult, but thrilling, situation (large surf) and ‘leap without looking?’ I wonder how many times my Father in Heaven has made the surf too big for me and I have looked for “the thrill” rather than seeing that He wanted me to wait for HIM.
My husband came back on Friday and Chris had an opportunity to surf with his DAD again. They chose to head back to Hemet instead, BECAUSE the thrill of the surf is still not as great as the opportunity to be with the FATHER (my interpretation).
Dear God, Let me desire your presence more than any other worldly thrill....' -- Donna
